About the role

We are seeking to recruit a new Retail Team Leader to work across both our shops on a rota basis, under the leadership of the Retail Business Manager. This role is a key part of the wider Operations Team, which includes part-time Retail Operations Assistants and shop volunteers. You will be given a core number of hours each week, with the potential for additional hours, according to the needs of the stores.

We are looking for an organised and efficient candidate, to be in charge of our physical store in Hoxton and our pop-up at Leadenhall, recruit and train our team of volunteer shopkeepers, and fulfil online orders.

When you are working, you will be responsible for all shop operations on the day, occasionally supported by volunteers or other team members. Therefore, we are seeking applicants who are trustworthy, comfortable and motivated to engage customers and carry out operational tasks when lone working or as a part of a team.

We are seeking applicants who can deliver excellent customer service, product building and re-stocking.

You will need to be able to drive good sales performance and deliver a positive, fun and successful shopping experience for our customers. There may be the opportunity to lead occasional events.

You will enjoy working for a small, supportive and impactful charity, and will care about creating the best possible shopping experience for our customers, to help raise our brand and profile.

This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check and has a one-month probationary period.

The Commitment

The role is being advertised as a fixed-term 9-month contract as we are in the fantastic position of being able to expand our shop offer over two stores! In addition to our permanent home in Hoxton, we are running a second pop-up store in Leadenhall Market. This is a short-term offer in a vacant unit which we hope to retain until December 2023. With the Retail Team Leader role in place, we plan to expand our opening hours in our Hoxton store and are therefore are looking to build a flexible team, able to take on additional hours (to support half-day openings, cover annual leave or support with online fulfilment), according to need, performance and availability of the stores each week. We have other plans for 2024, which we hope will give us the opportunity to retain this important role beyond May 2024. We hope to offer this role a minimum of three-fixed days/week across the sites and are ideally seeking candidate/s who are available to work Tuesdays – Saturdays, with a strong preference for regular availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and occasional availability for additional days on Fridays and Saturdays.

Why join our team?

Hoxton Street Monster Supplies (HSMS) is the only shop in the world to cater to the everyday needs of every imaginable kind of monster.

We have been serving London’s monster population (and the occasional human) since 1818. In 2020 we ranked no. 25 in Time Out’s 100 Best Shops in London.

We are a tiny team with big, hairy ambitions. Over the next three years, our plans include growing our sales and footfall, inventing more unique products, expanding our wholesale network, participating in trade shows and managing pop-up shops around London (this is why we need you!).

All this, while maintaining the good humour of our brand, providing fantastical in-store experiences for our customers and helping more young people to unleash their imaginations.

We will value your contributions and welcome your ideas for the shop. We are also keen to support your professional development and can explore opportunities with you.
