A group of curious young writers from Daubney Primary School have been pondering these very questions as they write ‘Help, I’m Trapped in the Stone Age!’ Year 3’s Kingfisher and Toucan classes travelled back in time using the ultimate time machine – their imaginations – and ended up with an anthology of extraordinary tales.

Anthology Excerpt 1

Their class teachers, Ms Lester and Ms Malik, gave us an intriguing summary: “Their tale begins with a curious discovery: a magic sausage with the unbelievable power to send a group of children tumbling back thousands of years. What follows is a journey packed with peril, wonder and just the right amount of chaos.”

They added, “From escaping the glare of a sabre-toothed tiger, to navigating a world of cave dwellers and ancient landscapes, to hunting down the legendary magic mango – Year 3’s story has everything you could wish for in a time-travelling escapade. Will their teamwork, bravery, and quick thinking be enough to get them home in one piece?”

Anthology Excerpt 3

Autumn – the facilitator and time-travelling guide for our intrepid young writers – told us about the questions that sparked these stories: “We looked at the stone age people and we asked, ‘who are they’, ‘what would they think of us’, and ‘would their mammoth burgers make us sick’. But our biggest concern turned out to be, what would we need to do to find a shared language?”

The more they explored, the more they discovered. Autumn said: “In this quest to communicate, Kingfisher class and Toucan class have told a story that’s filled with humour, curiosity and careful attention to detail – but it is their kindness and empathy that shines through. There’s a tense moment in the middle when the children realise they can’t all fit on the raft. What to do? “Build more rafts!” a character shouts angrily. Of course that’s what you do!”
