The doors of DreamState are nearly open…

The Ten Principles of DreamState 1

This week, we’ve swapped our regular workspace for Shoreditch Town Hall; DreamState is nearly here! After many months of imagining, designing, listening to our amazing young writers and supporting them as they create a dizzyingly spectacular variety of work, we’re finally at The Ditch, building the interactive exhibition that will showcase their writing.

May you find bliss
As you delve into the peace of a dream.

The ideas contained within DreamState come from the imaginations of the 112 members of our Community Writing Labs, brought to life with make:good, a local design and architecture studio. Throughout the project, our 11-15s group has taken a curatorial role, spotting common threads and shaping the eight imaginatively themed spaces.

As we set out on this journey together, we asked the group what principles should underpin DreamState. Their answer articulated how they wanted to be represented as artists, as well as how audiences should be welcomed.

The Ten Principles of DreamState

  • Respect. DreamState will be made with respect for one another.
  • Collaboration. There will be a fair spread of ideas and writing from across all five groups.
  • Welcome. Everyone’s identities are welcome (and we’ll find ways to show this).
  • Expression. DreamState will show the identity of Ministry of Stories.
  • Inclusivity. DreamState will be accessible for everyone, with thought given to disabled access and the needs of neurodivergent visitors.
  • Credit. All creators will be credited.
  • Originality. We want to surprise people.
  • Variety. We want to engage all the senses and create interesting things for the audience to explore.
  • Challenge. We want to invite the audience to try something new, and maybe face their fears.
  • Responsibility. We will respect the space, and ask audiences to do the same.

These principles have served as an invaluable guide as we’ve worked together, helping us to create an experience that resonates with our young writers’ wishes. We can’t wait to share DreamState with you soon!

Writing is illogical.
The concept that a combination
of lines on paper
can have such power over us,
make us laugh, cry,
see things in a new way,
drive people to do
wonderful or terrible things;
sounds impossible.
And yet…
