More Than Just A Run

Why I’m running Hackney Half for the Ministry of Stories By Abbey Lew

Everyone deserves to write their own story. My brilliant mentor and friend Corey believed in the importance of choosing our own stories and he lived by this until his last day.

This weekend, I am honoured to be running the Hackney Half Marathon in memory of Corey and to support the Ministry of Stories, an organisation based in east London dedicated to inspiring young writers to develop their storytelling skills and build their creative confidence.

When I first discovered the Ministry of Stories, I was charmed by its hidden location tucked behind a fantastical Monster Supplies shop on Hoxton Street. As I learned more about their innovative writing workshops and opportunities for young people, I instantly felt at home and was brought back to the creative spaces from when I was younger.

Growing up, I loved writing stories of my own. I was privileged to be surrounded by many books and games as a child and would draw inspiration from them to create my own imaginative worlds and stories. As I grew older, I became more interested in people and used journalism as a way to listen, connect and share stories and voices from the community.

When I met my friend Corey, he was working at our college’s writing centre as a peer tutor and mentor. He was a brilliant writer, storyteller and thinker and empowered people to become stronger communicators and leaders.

We also played on the same Ultimate Frisbee team for several years and captained our team together. During that time, I learned about leadership, mentorship, community and resilience which I continue to carry with me to this day.

Abbey runs along outside in a half marathon, wearing a black running shorts and top, smiling looking happy.

Last year, Corey tragically passed away and did not get the chance to finish his story. I was devastated to lose my mentor and friend and whilst I still don’t have the words to fully comprehend this loss, he continues to live on through shared memories and stories. I’m grateful for all that I learned from Corey over the years and hope to carry on his legacy of support and mentorship for years to come.

Corey was dedicated to improving the lives of those around him and he built strong communities wherever he went. Being a bold writer and deep thinker, Corey would have loved a place like the Ministry of Stories where young people are encouraged to share their stories without fear and to simply be themselves.

By running in memory of Corey and sharing my story, I hope to empower young writers and future leaders to continue writing their own.

Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and will directly support the Ministry of Stories. Please see Abbey’s fundraiser page to read more or feel free to share any stories of your own writing or mentoring journey. Thank you.
