Minister of the Month Deni Cherneva

Name: Deni Cherneva

Volunteer role: Writing mentor and illustrator

Lives: Gravesend, Kent

Favourite story and why

The story that I’ve liked most that’s come from one of the workshops was the Adventures of Tim Can (by Jayden).

It was great observing the process of him inventing the character and discovering how much there is to the life of a dog food tin (that’s Tim Can) and his journey through recycling.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am a freelance illustrator and visual storyteller. I come from sunny Bulgaria but fell in love with English muffins..!

Why did you decide to volunteer with Ministry of Stories?

As an illustrator, I wanted to learn from children, from their stories and great imagination. I also wanted to help them see that they had great stories and imagination inside of them.

Were you nervous about anything before starting?

I was a little bit nervous about my communication skills, but I soon found out that the children are so eager, that it was all just fun and easy!

What has been the best experience of volunteering?

The feeling that you’ve helped a child to express themselves and gain confidence. And of course, meeting other mentors that are so dedicated and positive towards children, illustrating and storytelling.

What has been the most unexpected thing about volunteering?

The amazing and really funny stories the kids come up with!

Describe the Ministry of Stories in three words

Positive, creative, family.

What would you say to other people thinking of volunteering with the Ministry?

Please do it! It is a lot of fun and you will learn so much from the children.
